The colon and rectum are parts of the digestive system of the body. They are responsible for removing nutrients from food and stores waste until it passes out of the body. The waste which is not digested or absorbed converted into the stool along with the dead digestive layer cells, the digestive juices that have been used, bacteria, and water.


The large intestine or colon is part of the anatomy of the colon between the appendix and rectum. The main function of this organ is to absorb water from the stool.


The rectum is the last organ of the large intestine that ends at the anus. This organ serves as a temporary storage stool. Deployment rectal wall due to the buildup of material in the rectum will trigger the nervous system that causes the desire to defecate. If defecation is not the case, often the material will be returned to the colon, where water absorption will be re-done. If defecation is not the case for a prolonged period, constipation and hardened feces will occur.

Colon and it`s problem

As the last line of food digestion, intestines will potentially suffer cancer from the food we consume.

Cancer that begins in the colon is called colon cancer, and cancer that begins in the rectum is called rectal cancer.
The exact cause of colon cancer is unknown.
However, research shows that the following risks also increase a person's chance of developing cancer :

  • AGE
    Colorectal cancer is more likely to occur as people get older. The disease is more common in people over the age of 50. However, colorectal cancer can occur at younger ages, even teenagers. Poor diet, including too much consumption of meat and fat which is not balanced by the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of fiber.

  • DIET
    Colorectal cancer is often associated with diets high in fat and calories and low in fiber. Poor diet, including too much consumption of meat and fat which is not balanced by the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of fiber. The excessive iron is found in bile pigment, beef and mutton as well as blood transfusion.

  • POLYPS
    Polyps are benign growths on the inner wall of the colon and rectum. They are fairly common in people over the age of 50. Some types of polyps increase a person's risk of developing colorectal cancer. Research shows that women with a history of uterine cancer, ovarian, or breast are at risk of developing colorectal cancer. Also, people who have had colorectal cancer may develop this disease a second time.

  • COLITIS
    Ulcerative colitis is a condition in which the layer of the colon becomes inflamed. Once it happens, the risk of colorectal cancer will increase.


Having one or more of the risk factors above will increase the chances of colorectal cancer.


SYMPTOMS

  • Fatigue, shortness of breath while working and the dizziness.
  • Bleeding in the rectum, temporary satiety, or stomach cramping and pressure on the rectum.
  • The presence of blood in the stool, as occurs in patients with bleeding ulcers, colon polyps, or hemorrhoids.
  • Pale, pain in general, malnutrition, weakness, weight loss, fluid in the abdominal cavity, liver enlargement, and dilation of lymphatic channels.

CAUSES

  • Contact with certain chemicals such as heavy metals, toxins, and ototoxin and electromagnetic waves.
  • Excessive iron found in bile, beef and mutton as well as in blood transfusion.
  • Saturated fats and omega-6 fatty acids (acid linol).
  • Alcoholic beverages, especially beer. Intestines convert alcohol into acetilaldehida which increases the risk of colon cancer.
  • Obesity.
  • Working while sitting all day, such as the executive, administrative, or public vehicle drivers.
  • Poor diet, including too much consumption of meat and fat which is not balanced by the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of fiber.

PREVENTION

  • Eat plenty of fiber to facilitate bowel movements and reduce the degree of acidity, concentration of fatty acids, bile acids, and iron in the colon.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids, which are widely found in certain fish.
  • Concentration of calcium, vitamin A, C, D, and E and beta-carotene.
  • Milk containing Lactobacillus acidophilus.
  • Exercise and move to ease defecation.
  • Relax and reduce stress.
