Of all heart’s health threats, high cholesterol is the most widely and commonly known as the primary cause of heart problems. Fatty foods, smoking and pollution are some aggravating factors which increase the risk of high blood pressure.

When excessive amount of cholesterol build up along the walls of the arteries, we will face a higher risk of blockage blood vessels leading to heart attack or stroke.

At normal levels, cholesterol is not a bad thing. On the contrary, it is an important raw material used by the body to build cell walls and produce hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. The body produces its own supply of cholesterol in the liver, and it is found naturally in all animal products (such as meat, eggs, milk, and cheese).

As one of the various fatty substances in the body, cholesterol is classified as a lipid. It is carried through the bloodstream attached to proteins, forming complexes called lipoproteins.

There are two major types of Lipoproteins

Lipoprotein Low Density (LDL) commonly known as "bad" cholesterol.

LDL is the cholesterol that tends to form deposits on the artery walls

High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)
commonly known as "good" cholesterol,

HDL helps to clear excess cholesterol from the bloodstream.

The ideal conditions that can improve heart health is low levels of LDL cholesterol, high levels of HDL cholesterol, and a moderate total of both. Cholesterol is measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood.

LDL (Low Density Protein)
Commonly called bad cholesterol. This makes the cholesterol clogging blood vessels. Healthy ranges are :
Healthy, smaller means better
Highest normal limit
160 - 189
Unhealthy, diet and lifestyle should be changed
Very unhealthy, because it increases the risk of stroke or heart disease

HDL (High Density Protein)
The opposite of LDL, this is the good cholesterol because it carries cholesterol available to the blood vessels to the liver which will then be removed from the body. Would be better if the body has a lot of good cholesterol. Healthy ranges are :

< 40
> 60

is the amount of the bad cholesterol (LDL) and good cholesterol (HDL). Healthy ranges are :

< 200
200 - 239
Alert to be careful
> 240
Unhealthy, try to increase the levels of HDL and lower LDL

is fat from food consumed, e.g from fatty foods or high carbohydrate foods. Healthy ranges are :

< 150
150 - 199
Alert to be careful
200 - 499
Unhealthy, consumption of fatty foods should be limited and multiply the consumption of fibrous foods
> 499
Very unhealthy. Consulting to the doctor for a better treatment is advised
